Biography
John Murphy is an English film composer. Born on 4 March 1965 in Liverpool, he is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who began his career in the 1980s, working with bands including The Lotus Eaters, Thomas Lang and Claudia Brücken. He started composing for films in the early 1990s, initially in partnership with David Hughes.
Murphy gained recognition for his scores to Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) and Snatch (2000). He has since collaborated with directors including Danny Boyle on 28 Days Later (2002), Sunshine (2007) and 28 Weeks Later (2007), Michael Mann on Miami Vice (2006), Matthew Vaughn on Kick-Ass (2010), and James Gunn on The Suicide Squad (2021). His instrumental pieces "In the House—In a Heartbeat" and "Adagio in D Minor" have been widely used in other media. Since 2000 he has been based in Los Angeles.
Murphy composed the score for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) and, with David Fleming, for Superman (2025).
