Biography
Kym Barrett is an Australian costume designer working in film, theatre and opera. She studied at the University of New England and the National Institute of Dramatic Art, then spent eight years in theatre with the Sydney Theatre Company and Belvoir Street before moving into film.
Barrett began her film career as a wardrobe assistant on Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom (1992) and designed costumes for his Romeo + Juliet (1996). She has collaborated regularly with the Wachowskis on The Matrix (1999) and its sequels, Speed Racer (2008), Cloud Atlas (2012) and Jupiter Ascending (2015). Other film credits include The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Aquaman (2018), Us (2019) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021).
Her theatre and opera work includes designs for Cirque du Soleil productions and the Metropolitan Opera’s The Tempest (2013). In 2013 she stepped down as costume designer for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
