Biography

Matt Smith is an English actor. He played the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC series Doctor Who (2010–2013), Prince Philip in the Netflix series The Crown (2016–2017) and Daemon Targaryen in the HBO series House of the Dragon (2022–present). He appeared as Russ in the 2025 film Caught Stealing.

Born in Northampton on 28 October 1982, Smith initially trained as a footballer before a back injury ended that ambition. He joined the National Youth Theatre and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia. His early stage work included productions such as The History Boys and That Face in London theatres.

His television debut came in 2006 in BBC adaptations of Philip Pullman’s Sally Lockhart novels. Film roles include appearances in Terminator Genisys (2015), Last Night in Soho (2021) and Morbius (2022).
