Biography

Matthew F. Leonetti is an American cinematographer. Born on 31 July 1941 in Los Angeles, California, he is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers. His father, Frank Leonetti, worked as a lighting technician, and his younger brother John R. Leonetti is also a cinematographer and director.

Leonetti began his career as a camera assistant and photographer on commercials. He shot numerous made-for-television films in the 1970s before his feature debut as cinematographer on The Bat People (1974). His work on Poltergeist (1982) led to further theatrical credits, including Breaking Away (1979), Dead Again (1991), Strange Days (1995), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), Rush Hour 2 (2001), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), The Butterfly Effect (2004) and Dawn of the Dead (2004). He has also served as second-unit director of photography on The Expendables (2010).
