Biography
Mel Bourne was an American production designer and art director. Born Melvin B. Bornstein on 22 November 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, he studied chemical engineering at Purdue University before serving in the US Army during the Second World War. After the war he trained in scenic design at the Yale School of Drama and worked in theatre and early television, designing for programmes including Howdy Doody and The Goldbergs.
Bourne moved into feature films in the 1970s. He collaborated with Woody Allen on seven films, beginning with Annie Hall (1977) and including Interiors (1978) and Manhattan (1979). His other credits include Thief (1981), Manhunter (1986), Fatal Attraction (1987), Cocktail (1988), Reversal of Fortune (1990) and The Fisher King (1991). He received three Academy Award nominations for best art direction, for Interiors, The Natural (1984) and The Fisher King.
He also designed the pilot for the television series Miami Vice. Bourne died of heart failure on 14 January 2003 in New York City.
