Biography

Penelope Wilton is an English actress born on 3 June 1946 in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. She trained at the Drama Centre London and began her career on stage in the late 1960s.

She is known for extensive theatre work, including six Olivier Award nominations and a win for Best Actress in 2015 for Taken at Midnight. Film roles include Barbara in Shaun of the Dead (2004), Mrs Gardiner in Pride & Prejudice (2005), Eleanor Hewett in Match Point (2005) and Isobel Merton in the Downton Abbey films (2019, 2022). Television appearances include Harriet Jones in Doctor Who (2005–2008) and Anne in After Life (2019–).

Wilton was appointed OBE in 2004 and DBE in 2016 for services to drama. She was previously married to actors Daniel Massey and Ian Holm.
