Biography
Hugh Bonneville is an English actor. Born Hugh Richard Bonniwell Williams on 10 November 1963 in Paddington, London, he was educated at Dulwich College Preparatory School and Sherborne School. He read theology at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, before training at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. He is an alumnus of the National Youth Theatre.
Bonneville began his career in theatre, including productions at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is best known for portraying Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, in the ITV series Downton Abbey (2010–2015) and its feature films (2019, 2022, 2025). He also plays Henry Brown in the Paddington films (2014, 2017, 2024).
His other film credits include Notting Hill (1999) and The Monuments Men (2014). He received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Iris (2001).
