Biography

Robert Holmes (2 April 1926 – 24 May 1986) was a British television scriptwriter and script editor. After service in the British Army during the Second World War and work as a policeman, he began writing for television in the late 1950s. Early credits included episodes of Knight Errant Limited, Emergency – Ward 10, Dr Finlay's Casebook and The Saint (1962).

Holmes wrote multiple serials for Doctor Who (1963) from 1968, including Spearhead from Space (1970) and The Caves of Androzani (1984), and served as its script editor from 1974 to 1977. He contributed to Blake's 7 (1978) and other series such as Doomwatch. He wrote under pseudonyms including William Hood, Stephen Harris and Robin Bland. Holmes died while working on further Doctor Who scripts.
