Biography
Stanley Townsend is an Irish actor. He was born in Dublin in August 1961 and attended Wesley College before studying mathematics and civil engineering at Trinity College Dublin, where he joined the Dublin University Players. He co-founded the Rough Magic theatre company and performed in productions at the Gate and Abbey Theatres in Dublin.
In London he has worked with directors including Sam Mendes, Richard Eyre and Rufus Norris. His stage credits include The Plough and the Stars, Guys and Dolls, Under the Blue Sky and Shining City, for which he received an Irish Theatre Award. Film and television appearances include In the Name of the Father (1993), Sherlock (2010) as Angelo, Cars 2 (2011), Andor (2022) and The Uprising (2026) as Robert Bealknap. He is married to actress Orla Charlton.
