Biography

Stephen Altman is an American production designer and art director. Born on 15 October 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri, he began working in the film industry in 1974 as an apprentice editor and projectionist on his father Robert Altman’s California Split.

He progressed through property, set decoration and art direction roles before becoming a production designer with Fool for Love (1985). Altman has collaborated extensively with his father on films including The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993), Ready to Wear (1994), Kansas City (1996) and Gosford Park (2001). Other credits include Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), Ray (2004), Chronicle (2012) and Draft Day (2014). He received an Academy Award nomination for best art direction for Gosford Park, shared with set decorator Anna Pinnock, as well as BAFTA and Emmy nominations.
