Biography
Valerio Bonelli is an Italian film and television editor. Born on 8 January 1976 in Naples, he trained at the National Film and Television School in London, where Stephen Frears was among his tutors. He began his career as an assistant editor on Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000), working with Pietro Scalia, and subsequently remained in the United Kingdom.
Bonelli has edited numerous feature films and series, including Philomena (2013), The Martian (2015, co-editor), Darkest Hour (2017), Florence Foster Jenkins (2016), Cyrano (2021) and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019). He has maintained a long collaboration with director Joe Wright, beginning with an episode of Black Mirror (2016) and continuing with Darkest Hour, Cyrano and the series Mussolini: Son of the Century (2025). Other credits include work for Stephen Frears and Cosima Spender. He has received two wins and two nominations for his editing, among them the Tribeca Film Festival award for best documentary editing on Palio (2015).
