Christina Ricci is especially good at making defiance uncomfortable: her outsiders can be funny without becoming easy company. We rate her most when a director gives her more to do than seem odd, as Ang Lee does in The Ice Storm.

Christina Ricci's Wendy Hood in The Ice Storm (1997) is watchful enough to make us wary of taking her side. Ricci gives the younger generation an abrasive presence where a softer performance might have invited sympathy too easily. We felt uncomfortable watching her, because she makes it harder to dismiss the adults and congratulate the children. That discomfort is a good reason to seek out her work: she can give a character wit without making them pleasant.
Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family (1991) established the deadpan delivery and the association with dark characters early. Those qualities could easily have restricted the parts offered to her. The move towards adult-oriented independent cinema with The Ice Storm gave the defiant adolescent something more complicated to be than amusingly strange. Ricci could play confusion as well as wit, without smoothing away the behaviour that makes Wendy awkward company.
Lee gets particular value from placing her among other young performers. With Tobey Maguire, Elijah Wood and Adam Hann-Byrd, she stops the children becoming a set of innocents provided for us to approve of. Joan Allen's Elena draws sympathy through the strain of keeping her composure, while Ricci gives Wendy a harder manner. We recommend the film warmly, despite its overworked weather symbolism. Ricci matters to that recommendation because she makes the family drama less comfortable without making it less involving.
Sleepy Hollow (1999), with Tim Burton, continues the gothic association, while Selby Wall in Monster (2003) gives her the complex supporting work that suits her. The independent films of the 2000s and 2010s, alongside occasional mainstream projects, did not entirely remove the risk of being cast as the odd one. Misty Quigley in the television series Yellowjackets (2021) draws on her ability to make an unsettling figure feel grounded. The reservation is that eccentric parts can become as predictable a choice as conventional leading-lady roles, which have not always suited her. Start with The Ice Storm, where Lee gives her defiance something difficult to do.

Christina Ricci is an American actress. She was born on 12 February 1980 in Santa Monica, California.
She made her film debut in Mermaids (1990) and appeared as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). Ricci voiced Erin in the The Simpsons episode 'Summer of 4 Ft. 2' (1996). Other credits include Casper (1995), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Grey's Anatomy (2006) and Wednesday (2022).
