Biography
Fred Schuler is a German cinematographer. Born in Munich in 1940, he moved to the United States at the age of 22 and worked initially as an engineer on film camera development before becoming a camera operator on numerous New York productions in the 1970s.
He served as camera operator on films including Taxi Driver (1976), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Annie Hall (1977), The Deer Hunter (1978) and Manhattan (1979). Schuler made his debut as director of photography on Gloria (1980) and went on to shoot The King of Comedy (1982) for Martin Scorsese, as well as Arthur (1981), Fletch (1985) and The Woman in Red (1984). He became a member of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1986.
In the mid-1990s Schuler returned to Germany, where he has worked on features such as Der Totmacher (1995) and several films directed by Romuald Karmakar.
