Ike Barinholtz is a sharp ensemble comedian whose impulsive men can be more human than their behaviour suggests. His broad playing works; the risk is a part that gives him nothing beyond the caricature.

In The Studio (2025), Ike Barinholtz's Sal Saperstein stays sharp even when a joke has started to wear out. His studio executive is one reason Seth Rogen's anxious Matt does not have to carry every embarrassment himself. Barinholtz drew on his experience of pitching to executives for the part, and the pragmatism helps keep Sal from being merely another source of noise. We rate him most in an ensemble, where his characters can be impulsive and self-important without the performance having to overwhelm everyone else's.
He developed his broad comedy as a performer and writer on MADtv (2002–2007), then became a sitcom regular as Morgan Tookers in The Mindy Project (2012–2017), where he also wrote. His improvisation is built around developing whole scenes, a useful skill when a character has to last beyond a sketch. Film parts included Jimmy Blevins alongside Rogen in Neighbors (2014). The Oath (2018) took him into writing and directing a feature as well as starring in it.
Blockers (2018), in which he plays Hunter Lockwood, is a useful example of how physical, broad comedy need not rule out humanity. There is a person to play as well as behaviour to exaggerate. The limitation is casting that asks him to keep supplying the same chaos, with too little else to make the character worth following. Some of the studio comedy work, including Neighbors, brings him close to caricature; commitment alone cannot make those parts more substantial.
The Studio makes better use of him because the supporting cast share the comic work, with Chase Sui Wonders helping to keep the professional chaos moving. We were relieved by Barinholtz's sharpness when the programme began to labour its jokes; he remained funny even when the writing was making the embarrassment last too long. Catherine O'Hara and Kathryn Hahn are valuable for much the same reason. The caveat is the programme's fondness for its own industry, which sometimes makes its mockery less forceful than it promises. Start there for Barinholtz, provided an evening of other people's workplace anxiety sounds like entertainment.
Biography
Ike Barinholtz is an American actor and comedian. Born on 18 February 1977 in Chicago, Illinois, he began his career in the local improv scene after dropping out of Boston University. He performed with troupes including Boom Chicago in Amsterdam and Second City before joining the cast of the sketch series MADtv from 2002 to 2007.
He is known for recurring roles in Eastbound & Down (2012), The Mindy Project (2012–2017) and The Afterparty (2022), as well as film appearances in Neighbors (2014), Suicide Squad (2016) and The Disaster Artist (2017). Barinholtz co-wrote the screenplay for Central Intelligence (2016). Since 2025 he has starred as Sal Saperstein in the Apple TV+ series The Studio, a role that earned him a Critics' Choice Award.
