Biography

John Mathieson (born 3 May 1961) is an English cinematographer and commercial director. He began his career in the British film industry as a camera assistant before shooting music videos and commercials in the late 1980s and 1990s.

Mathieson is a frequent collaborator with director Ridley Scott. He won a BAFTA Film Award and received an Academy Award nomination for his work on Gladiator (2000); he earned a second Oscar nomination for The Phantom of the Opera (2004). His credits include Gladiator II (2024), Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Logan (2017) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015).
