Linda Cardellini makes domestic lives funny without making the people living them seem simple. We rate her most when their behaviour is difficult to judge; some of the early film roles gave her rather less to do.

In DTF St. Louis (2026), Linda Cardellini keeps a love triangle worth following while Jason Bateman and David Harbour make the men's friendship persuasive enough to sustain a programme of its own. As Carol Love-Smernitch, she has to make the romantic complications matter alongside that friendship. She does it with comic force. We rate her ability to be funny without letting that become the only reason a character is worth watching.
Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000) established her as a lead through Lindsay Weir, a suburban teenager. The early film work offered less room: Scooby-Doo (2002), in which she played Velma, belongs to a stretch of comic sidekick and ensemble parts that could restrict what she was asked to do. Those restrictions should not be mistaken for limitations in her acting. As Cassie Cartwright in Brokeback Mountain (2005), she brought vulnerability to a supporting role that could have been one-note.
Dead to Me (2019–2022) gave her a lead as Judy Hale and room to bring comedy and drama into the same performance. Judy's mixture of domestic familiarity and hidden complications fits a pattern in her casting that continues with Carol. The attraction for us is that vulnerability need not make either woman easy to approve of. We would rather watch her work through that difficulty than be called on whenever a film needs a joke.
Steven Conrad's DTF St. Louis is not entirely successful: the investigation is less compelling than the relationships, and the pace sometimes slackens. We were more moved than we expected by Harbour's performance because he makes Floyd Smernitch's wish for company painfully ordinary. That gives the friendship a considerable advantage, and Cardellini deserves credit for keeping the love triangle in contention rather than leaving us impatient to get back to the men. We would not pretend she fixes the slower passages, but her contribution makes the relationship comedy a sound reason to watch. Start there if awkward friendships and romantic complications interest you more than the murder investigation.
Biography
Linda Cardellini is an American actress. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Loyola Marymount University and completed a summer study programme at the National Theatre in London.
On television she is known for her roles as Lindsay Weir in Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000), Samantha Taggart in ER (2003–09), Meg Rayburn in Bloodline (2015–17) and Judy Hale in Dead to Me (2019–22). She received Emmy nominations for guest appearances in Mad Men (2013–15) and for Dead to Me. In 2026 she played Carol Love-Smernitch in the HBO limited series DTF St. Louis and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Her film credits include Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo (2002), Chutney Windham in Legally Blonde (2001), Cassie Cartwright in Brokeback Mountain (2005), Laura Barton in the Avengers films (2015, 2019), Dolores in Green Book (2018) and Lylla in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023).
