Biography

Martin Phipps is a British composer of film and television scores. He is the son of Sue Pears and Jack Phipps, an arts administrator. He read drama at the University of Manchester.

Phipps composed music for the television series Black Mirror (2011) and the film Napoleon (2023). His other credits include Peaky Blinders (2013), The Crown (2016), Woman in Gold (2015), Harry Brown (2009), The Aftermath (2019), X+Y (2014) and Black Doves (2024). He has also worked under the name Mearl.

He scored the 1999 miniseries Eureka Street. Phipps has received BAFTA Craft Awards for Wallander (2009) and Small Island (2010), and Ivor Novello Awards for scores including The Virgin Queen (2005) and Oliver Twist (2007).
