Biography
Michael Gough was a British character actor. Born Francis Michael Gough on 23 November 1916 in Kuala Lumpur, then part of the Federated Malay States, he was raised in England after his family returned there when he was six. He attended agricultural college before training at the Old Vic theatre from 1936.
Gough appeared in more than 150 film and television productions. He was known for roles in Hammer horror films beginning with Dracula (1958) and for playing Alfred Pennyworth in the four Batman films directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher: Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995) and Batman & Robin (1997). He also appeared in Sleepy Hollow (1999) and provided voices for Corpse Bride (2005) and Alice in Wonderland (2010). In 1979 he won a Tony Award for his stage performance in Bedroom Farce.
Gough died on 17 March 2011 in England, aged 94.
