Biography
Peter Sarsgaard, also credited as John Peter Sarsgaard, is an American actor. He was born on 7 March 1971 at Scott Air Force Base near Belleville, Illinois. He studied history and literature at Washington University in St. Louis and trained at the Actors Studio in New York.
Sarsgaard made his feature film debut in Dead Man Walking (1995). He gained recognition for roles in The Man in the Iron Mask (1998), Boys Don't Cry (1999) and Shattered Glass (2003), for which he won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actor and received a Golden Globe nomination. His other notable films include Jarhead (2005), Orphan (2009), Blue Jasmine (2013), Black Mass (2015), The Magnificent Seven (2016), The Batman (2022) and Memory (2023). He has also appeared in television series such as The Killing (2013), Dopesick (2021) and Presumed Innocent (2024).
In 2026 he played Jake Wiles in the film The Bride! and Christopher Spurce / 'Modern Love' in the series DTF St. Louis. Sarsgaard is married to actress and director Maggie Gyllenhaal.
