Biography
Russell Boyd is an Australian cinematographer. Born on 21 April 1944 in Victoria, he began his career at Cinesound in Melbourne before moving to Sydney in the mid-1960s to work on documentaries and commercials. He became a key figure in the Australian New Wave of the 1970s.
Boyd is known for his collaborations with director Peter Weir on films including Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), Gallipoli (1981), The Year of Living Dangerously (1982), Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) and The Way Back (2010). He has also worked on Crocodile Dundee (1986), Liar Liar (1997) and Ghost Rider (2007). He won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Master and Commander and the BAFTA Award for Picnic at Hanging Rock.
Boyd is a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society and the American Society of Cinematographers. He was inducted into the ACS Hall of Fame in 1998 and appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2021.
