Biography
Shirley MacLaine is an American actor. Born Shirley MacLean Beaty on 24 April 1934 in Richmond, Virginia, she began her career on Broadway in the 1950s with roles in musicals including The Pajama Game. She made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock's The Trouble with Harry (1955).
MacLaine rose to prominence with starring roles in Around the World in 80 Days (1956), Some Came Running (1958) and The Apartment (1960), in which she played elevator operator Fran Kubelik opposite Jack Lemmon. A six-time Academy Award nominee, she won the Oscar for Best Actress for Terms of Endearment (1983). Other notable films include Being There (1979), Steel Magnolias (1989) and In Her Shoes (2005). She has also appeared in television series such as Downton Abbey (2010) and Only Murders in the Building (2021).
MacLaine's brother is actor and director Warren Beatty. Her career has spanned more than seven decades across film, television and stage.
