Biography
Steven M. Rales is an American businessman and film producer. He co-founded Danaher Corporation with his brother Mitchell Rales in 1984 and has served as its chairman. In 2006 he founded the production company Indian Paintbrush, which has a long-term deal with Searchlight Pictures.
Indian Paintbrush has produced or executive-produced numerous films, frequently in collaboration with director Wes Anderson. Rales is credited as producer on Asteroid City (2023) and The Phoenician Scheme (2025). His other credits include Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Isle of Dogs (2018) and The French Dispatch (2021). He has received three Academy Award nominations for his work with Anderson, winning Best Live Action Short Film for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023).
Rales was born on 31 March 1951 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also a co-owner of Janus Films and The Criterion Collection.
