Biography
Walter Gotell (born Walter Jacques Goettel) was a German-British actor. Born in Bonn, Germany, in 1924, his family emigrated to the United Kingdom in the late 1930s. He began working in films in the early 1940s, frequently cast as German military figures, and became a naturalised British citizen in 1948.
Gotell appeared as the Second Officer in The African Queen (1951). He played Morzeny in From Russia with Love (1963) and the recurring role of KGB General Anatol Gogol in six James Bond films from The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) to The Living Daylights (1987). Other film credits include Ice Cold in Alex (1958), The Guns of Navarone (1961), Lord Jim (1965), Black Sunday (1977) and The Boys from Brazil (1978). He also worked extensively in television, with guest roles in series including The X-Files (1995) and Star Trek: The Next Generation (1988).
