Biography
Affonso Gonçalves is a Brazilian film editor born on 8 June 1967 in São Paulo. He studied at the London Film School for three years and at the American Film Institute, graduating in 1993. He has lived and worked in the United States since 1994.
Gonçalves began his career as assistant editor on Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995). He is a frequent collaborator with directors Todd Haynes (including Carol (2015), Wonderstruck (2017), Dark Waters (2019) and May December (2023)) and Jim Jarmusch (including Only Lovers Left Alive (2013), Paterson (2016) and The Dead Don't Die (2019)). Other credits include Winter's Bone (2010), Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), The Lost Daughter (2021), Don't Worry Darling (2022) and Hamnet (2025).
In 2014 he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for editing the episode "Who Goes There" of the first season of True Detective. He is a member of the American Cinema Editors.
