Charlotte Rampling is compelling when she lets grief or desire show through a stern exterior. Her restraint gives these women depth, though we sometimes wish she would let a scene move a little faster.

Rampling’s stern look makes us wonder what she has decided not to say. It draws us towards a character, provided the film eventually gives us more to consider than her composure. The boldness of Meredith in Georgy Girl (1966) established an early screen presence that could unsettle an audience. The move into European arthouse cinema brought Liliana Cavani’s The Night Porter (1974), with Rampling as Lucia. That work helped establish the enigmatic image, but her later performances make it too narrow a description.
The Verdict (1982) shows both the value and the possible cost of that restraint. Sidney Lumet’s film is superbly acted, and Rampling’s Laura Fischer belongs in that company, but her reserve can add to a solemn pace that already needs little encouragement. We were moved by Paul Newman’s worn-down Frank Galvin, whose exhaustion makes the familiar promise of redemption worth following. Rampling is less immediately accessible, and there are stretches when we want a little more from her. Lumet gives us enough elsewhere to make the patience worthwhile.
François Ozon’s Under the Sand (2000) marked a return to leading roles in French cinema; Swimming Pool (2003) continued a productive collaboration. These are useful films for getting beyond the idea that her chief talent is looking forbidding. In 45 Years (2015), playing Kate Mercer, she brings that restraint to grief, marriage and memory. The appeal of these later roles is the time they give an older woman’s feelings, without asking Rampling to become more demonstrative.
In Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two (2024), Reverend Mother Mohiam draws on the stern authority that has become a familiar part of Rampling’s screen work. We recommend the film for the assurance of its large-scale science fiction, with a caveat about the unconvincing love story. Her casting makes sense, but this is not where we would send someone to understand what she can do with grief or desire. The risk with the matriarchal parts is that severity becomes all a film asks of her. Start with The Verdict, then try her work with Ozon.
Biography
Charlotte Rampling is an English actress. Born Tessa Charlotte Rampling on 5 February 1946 in Sturmer, Essex, she began her career as a model in the 1960s before moving into film with roles in Georgy Girl (1966) and The Damned (1969).
She is known for performances in European arthouse cinema, including The Night Porter (1974), Swimming Pool (2003) and 45 Years (2015), as well as later appearances in Never Let Me Go (2010), Melancholia (2011), Assassin's Creed (2016), Red Sparrow (2018) and the Dune films (2021 and 2024) as Reverend Mother Mohiam. Rampling was appointed OBE in 2000 for services to the arts.
