Biography

Dean Semler is an Australian cinematographer. He began his career as a camera operator at a local television station in South Australia before working on documentaries and educational films for Film Australia.

Semler gained international recognition for his work on Dances with Wolves (1990), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He also served as cinematographer on City Slickers (1991), Mad Max 2 (1981), Waterworld (1995), Apocalypto (2006) and Maleficent (2014). He is a member of the Australian Cinematographers Society and the American Society of Cinematographers, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2002.
