Biography
Dorothy Jeakins (1914–1995) was an American costume designer who worked in film, theatre and television. Born in San Diego, California, she studied at the Otis Art Institute after receiving a scholarship while at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, and also attended the Art Students League of Los Angeles.
She began her film career as a sketch artist on Joan of Arc (1948), sharing an Academy Award for costume design. Jeakins freelanced throughout her career and received two further Oscars, for Samson and Delilah (1949, shared) and The Night of the Iguana (1964), along with twelve further nominations. Her credits include The Ten Commandments (1956), The Sound of Music (1965), The Way We Were (1973), Young Frankenstein (1974) and On Golden Pond (1981).
