Biography
Edith Head (née Posener) was an American costume designer whose career spanned five decades and hundreds of films. She worked primarily at Paramount Pictures, where she became head of the costume department, and later at Universal. Head received 35 Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and won a record eight times, from The Heiress (1949) to The Sting (1973).
She designed costumes for eleven films directed by Alfred Hitchcock, including Rear Window (1954) and Vertigo (1958). Other notable credits include Sunset Boulevard (1950), Roman Holiday (1953), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), The Birds (1963) and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). Head was born in San Bernardino, California, and died in 1981.
