Biography
Douglas Slocombe was a British cinematographer. Born in London in 1913, he began as a photojournalist and newsreel cameraman, filming footage of the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939 that was used in the documentary Lights Out in Europe. This led to his employment at Ealing Studios, where he worked from the mid-1940s and shot films including Dead of Night (1945), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Man in the White Suit (1951).
After Ealing, Slocombe worked freelance on numerous features. He served as director of photography on the first three Indiana Jones films: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). He also shot The Italian Job (1969), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) and Rollerball (1975). Slocombe won three BAFTA Awards for Best Cinematography, for The Servant (1963), The Great Gatsby (1974) and Julia (1977), and received three Academy Award nominations. He was appointed OBE in 2008 and died in 2016.
