Biography

Hayley Atwell is a British and American actress. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and began her career in stage productions, including several at the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company.

She appeared in period dramas such as Brideshead Revisited (2008) and The Duchess (2008), and the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth (2010). Atwell gained wider recognition for playing Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films beginning with Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and later as Grace in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025). She also appeared as Madison in Paddington in Peru (2024) and Martha Starmer in Black Mirror (2011).

Atwell has received Laurence Olivier Award nominations for stage roles in The Pride (2013) and Rosmersholm (2020).
