Biography
Jörg Widmer is a German cinematographer and Steadicam operator. He trained as a photographer, specialising in car advertising photography, before completing an internship at public broadcaster Südwestfunk and working as a camera assistant. Since 1988 he has worked as a cinematographer and Steadicam operator.
Widmer served as director of photography on Wim Wenders’ Buena Vista Social Club (1999). He has collaborated extensively with Terrence Malick, operating camera and Steadicam on films including The Tree of Life (2011) and V for Vendetta (2006), and acting as cinematographer on A Hidden Life (2019). His other credits as operator or second-unit cinematographer include Amélie (2001), Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) and Atomic Blonde (2017).
In 1994 Widmer received the Bayerischer Filmpreis for camera work on Das Versprechen. He was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2020.
