Lori Alan makes animated characters distinct through small, practical vocal choices. We value that precision, though her supporting film roles often leave little space for the actor who found a teenage whale’s voice by lowering her pitch.

Alan lowers her voice for Pearl Krabs, the teenage whale in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999), to match her size. It is the sort of choice we like in voice acting: specific to the body on screen, easy to understand and not fussy. Her improvisational background suits recording sessions that demand quick character decisions. She was cast as Pearl and as Diane Simmons in Family Guy in 1999. Those roles are a more useful starting point than the additional-voice credits on her feature-film CV.
In the features, we need to be careful about what we are praising. She supplies additional voices in Andrew Stanton’s WALL·E (2008), rather than playing a named principal character. We were moved by its robot romance; Stanton’s patient storytelling gives the affection time to matter before the action takes over. We recommend the film readily, but that is not a judgement on an individual performance we cannot confidently pick out.
Bonnie’s Mom, first voiced by Alan in Toy Story 3 (2010), is more typical of her frequent maternal roles. In Toy Story 5 (2026), she and Jay Hernandez voice Bonnie’s parents, and the film gives the humans little time to settle. Stanton brings wit and craft, but his treatment of a child’s attachment to a tablet is disappointingly timid. Editors Robert Grahamjones, Jason Hudak, Ayse Dedeoglu and Jennifer Neysa Jew keep jumping between the humans, the toy box and the Buzzes. Alan has little chance to make an impression in that hurry.
We would not hold that editing against her; there is only so much an actor can establish before the film cuts away. Her quick character work is a useful skill, but a small part in a busy film can leave us struggling to appreciate it. Begin with Pearl rather than Bonnie’s Mom if the aim is to hear what makes Alan distinctive.

Lori Alan is an American actress and voice actress. She was born on 18 July 1966 in Potomac, Maryland.
She is known for voicing Pearl Krabs in SpongeBob SquarePants (1999–present) and Diane Simmons in Family Guy (1999–2010). Her Pixar roles include Bonnie's Mom in Toy Story 3 (2010), Toy Story 4 (2019) and Toy Story 5 (2026), as well as additional voices in WALL·E (2008), Inside Out (2015) and Monsters University (2013). She has also provided voices for Despicable Me 2 (2013), Minions (2015) and Despicable Me 3 (2017).
Alan trained at New York University and has appeared in live-action roles including on Friends and Grey's Anatomy.
