Mark Margolis could convey hostility with scarcely a word or movement. We rate that precision, though repeated casting as villains can obscure the actor who also found room in comedies and Darren Aronofsky's troubled dramas.

A bell and a hostile expression give Mark Margolis enough to work with as Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad. There is menace in how little he moves, and no difficulty reading the anger. We admire the precision, but the part's late-career prominence can narrow the way we think of him. The actor who repeatedly worked with Darren Aronofsky deserves attention beyond his ability to make another man uncomfortable.
Brian De Palma's Scarface (1983) gave him an early notable part as the henchman Alberto, a good indication of the dangerous men he would often be asked to play. But Mr Shickadance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) belongs to the comic work that complicates that picture. Then Pi (1998), with Margolis as Sol Robeson, began six collaborations with Aronofsky. It is the more useful turn to follow if we want to see him outside the villainous parts.
Pi makes mathematical obsession tense and grubby through grainy images and abrasive music. We were struck by its loneliness, because the relentless pressure makes obsession seem a miserable way to live. We recommend it to anyone with a taste for paranoid thrillers, though Aronofsky presses so hard that he leaves the ideas underexamined. His continuing use of Margolis in supporting parts, from mentors to priests, gave the actor opportunities beyond familiar threats and tempers. Requiem for a Dream (2000), with Margolis as Mr Rabinowitz, offers another route through that collaboration.
The limitation is the casting: another hot-tempered authority figure can tell us too much about the part before Margolis has done anything with it. His control is worth watching even when the role is familiar, but familiarity remains a cost. Better Call Saul, in which he returned as Hector from 2015 to 2022, gave him more dialogue and more of the character to play. For a different route into his work, though, we would start with Pi and continue through the Aronofsky films.
Biography
Mark Margolis (1939–2023) was an American actor. He studied briefly at Temple University before moving to New York, where he trained with Stella Adler and at the Actors Studio.
He appeared in Darren Aronofsky’s films from Pi (1998), in which he played Sol Robeson, through to Noah (2014). Other notable film roles include Shadow in Scarface (1983), Mr Shickadance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) and Mr Rabinowitz in Requiem for a Dream (2000). On television he played Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad (2008–2011) and Better Call Saul (2015–2022), for which he received an Emmy nomination, and Antonio Nappa in Oz (1998–2003).
