Paddy Considine can make a troubled man both menacing and vulnerable without exaggerating either. We rate his restraint, though MobLand leaves him with supporting writing that does not reliably reward it.

Paddy Considine makes a troubled man's quietness worth watching. He can suggest anger and vulnerability without exaggerating either, so we remain interested in characters we might prefer to avoid. It is the quality we look for when he appears as Kevin Harrigan in MobLand (2025). The series is decent company for gangster-drama regulars, but its slow start and familiar plotting matter. Considine's casting promises a depth that the supporting writing does not reliably supply.
Shane Meadows is the useful starting point. He directed Considine's debut in A Room for Romeo Brass (1999). Considine then co-wrote and starred in their revenge thriller Dead Man's Shoes (2004), playing Richard with a restraint that makes the menace credible. His own move into directing began with the short Dog Altogether (2007), followed by the feature Tyrannosaur (2011).
His television work shows why the material matters. In House of the Dragon (2022), his King Viserys Targaryen gives him scope for the physical and emotional detail he handles well. MobLand surrounds him with Pierce Brosnan's Conrad Harrigan and Helen Mirren's Maeve Harrigan, whose heavy vocal performances can be entertaining but whose threats become interchangeable. Against that sort of broad playing, the prospect of Considine giving Kevin greater depth is especially appealing.
We were frustrated by MobLand, because the supporting writing did not consistently give Kevin the depth Considine's casting promised. Tom Hardy's fixer supplies plenty of entertainment, and we would not dismiss the programme's pleasures for those who like their gangsters played broadly. We would still look elsewhere to understand why Considine's presence raises expectations in the first place. For Considine, start with Dead Man's Shoes; for MobLand, an appetite for broad gangster drama will help.
Biography
Paddy Considine is an English actor, director, screenwriter and musician. Born Patrick George Considine on 5 September 1973 in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, he trained at Burton College and the University of Brighton.
He first appeared on screen in A Room for Romeo Brass (1999), directed by Shane Meadows, with whom he has collaborated several times, including on Dead Man's Shoes (2004). Other film roles include Hot Fuzz (2007), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The World's End (2013) and The Death of Stalin (2017). On television he has played Father John Hughes in Peaky Blinders (2016) and King Viserys I Targaryen in House of the Dragon (2022).
Considine wrote and directed the short film Dog Altogether (2007) and its feature adaptation Tyrannosaur (2011). He received Olivier and Tony Award nominations for his stage performance in The Ferryman (2018–2019) and plays Kevin Harrigan in the series MobLand (2025).
