Biography
Sam Mendes is a British film and stage director, producer and screenwriter. He directed Skyfall (2012) and has produced Hamnet (2025).
Born on 1 August 1965 in Reading, Berkshire, Mendes read English at the University of Cambridge. He began his career in theatre, directing productions at the Donmar Warehouse and later earning three Laurence Olivier Awards and two Tony Awards for his stage work.
In film, Mendes made his directorial debut with American Beauty (1999), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. His other films include 1917 (2019) and Spectre (2015). He was appointed CBE in 2000 and knighted in 2020.
