Sandra Bullock is especially good at making wit feel like a way of coping with trouble. We value her most when that humour and her physical commitment give an improbable plot someone worth worrying about.

In Speed (1994), Sandra Bullock is at the wheel of a bus with a bomb on it, supplying humour without making the danger seem trivial. Annie's wit feels like a human response to trouble, which gives us a reason to care about her beyond the next stunt. We laughed, then worried about her, because that humour had made her such engaging company. It is a useful reminder that an action performance can do more than look convincing under pressure.
Director Jan de Bont gives the film little time for hesitation, and Bullock suits that urgency. Opposite her, Keanu Reeves takes Jack Traven seriously, sometimes stiffly; her lighter touch helps the partnership without making him look foolish. The plot overreaches, but the two remain worth following. Bullock's physical commitment matters here, though the more valuable skill is making a huge action premise depend on whether we like the person caught up in it.
That breakthrough led to romantic comedies: While You Were Sleeping (1995) established her in the genre, while Miss Congeniality (2000) made use of her fish-out-of-water comedy. These were sensible uses of an actor whose timing makes capable people funny without making them ridiculous. The difficulty is repetition, with Two Weeks Notice (2002) illustrating the risk of romantic-comedy typecasting. A personable lead can make a formula easier to sit through without giving it much that is new.
Crash (2004) marked a deliberate move towards ensemble drama, with The Blind Side (2009) another step into more serious material. The latter also exposes a problem: even a strong lead performance cannot do enough for a story prone to sentimentality and simplification. Gravity (2013) is a more persuasive development, drawing on her ability to make physically demanding, technically complex work convincing. The physical commitment already apparent in Speed has a use well beyond action comedy.
We would still start with Speed, allowing for a plot that is less reliable than its leads. It gives Bullock's humour something urgent to work against, and makes being likable matter to the action. We would sooner see that skill tested in future roles than retired in the name of seriousness.

Sandra Bullock is an American actress and producer. She was born Sandra Annette Bullock on 26 July 1964 in Arlington County, Virginia.
Bullock made her film debut in Hangmen (1987) and gained attention for her role in Demolition Man (1993). Her breakthrough came with the lead role of Annie in the action thriller Speed (1994). Subsequent leading roles include While You Were Sleeping (1995), Miss Congeniality (2000), The Proposal (2009), The Blind Side (2009) and Gravity (2013).
She has received an Academy Award for Best Actress for The Blind Side and a Golden Globe Award. Bullock founded the production company Fortis Films.
