Whoopi Goldberg gives broad comedy recognisable human motives and knows how hard to push without crowding her fellow actors. We value her most in Ghost, where her irreverence keeps the romance from becoming oppressive.

In Ghost (1990), Whoopi Goldberg's Oda Mae Brown treats the supernatural business as an inconvenience she has every right to resent. Her fake-medium routine is hungry for attention, and the comedy comes from that recognisable need. We laughed at her self-importance because Goldberg makes it so familiar. She can push a scene hard without reducing the other actors to people waiting for their next line. This is where we rate her most highly: giving a broadly drawn character enough ordinary human feeling to belong beside the lovers.
The quieter work matters, too. Her one-woman character monologues preceded The Colour Purple (1985), where she played Celie with a restraint that the later comedies did not always ask of her. After that dramatic breakthrough, vehicles such as Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) offered broader comedy and less room for that stillness. Sister Act (1992), with Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, put her comic timing and musical presence at the centre. Anyone coming to her through the comedies has a reason to go back to Celie.
Jerry Zucker gives her space in Ghost, and Walter Murch's editing works particularly well when her comedy interrupts the romantic passages. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore sustain the longing; Goldberg lets us take a breath without making their attachment seem foolish. The plotting still stalls, and she cannot stop the sweetness accumulating. The role also leans on the familiar outspoken supporting figure, a limitation that her performance does not simply erase.
As the voice of Shenzi in The Lion King (1994), she is part of another strong ensemble. The film earns its feeling through expressive animation and a voice cast that gives the family drama weight, though its lessons can become overbearing. The humour helps those lessons go down. Start with Ghost for Goldberg, provided a generous helping of sentiment suits the evening.

Whoopi Goldberg, born Caryn Elaine Johnson, is an American actor, comedian and producer. She adopted her stage name in the early 1980s and made her film debut in The Color Purple (1985).
Goldberg received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for The Color Purple. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Oda Mae Brown in Ghost (1990). Other film credits include Detective Avery in The Player (1992) and the voice of Shenzi in The Lion King (1994). She has also appeared in Sister Act (1992) and voiced roles in Toy Story 3 (2010) and other animated features.
Goldberg has hosted the daytime talk show The View since 2007 and is one of the few performers to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
