Biography
Ernest Haller was an American cinematographer. Born in Los Angeles in 1896, he began his career in the film industry in 1914 as an actor at Biograph Studios before becoming a cameraman the following year. His first credit as cinematographer came in 1920.
Haller worked extensively at Warner Bros. and was known for his collaborations with actresses including Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. He received seven Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and won once, for Gone with the Wind (1939), shared with Ray Rennahan and others. Other notable credits include Jezebel (1938), Mildred Pierce (1945), Rebel Without a Cause (1955), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) and Lilies of the Field (1963). He also shot the second pilot episode of the television series Star Trek (1966). Haller died in a car accident in Marina del Rey, California, in 1970.
