Biography
Jean Louis (born Jean Louis Berthault) was a French-American costume designer. He was born in Paris on 5 October 1907 and died in Palm Springs, California, on 20 April 1997.
Before moving to Hollywood he worked in New York for fashion designer Hattie Carnegie. He served as head designer at Columbia Pictures from 1944 to 1960 and later freelanced, with credits including Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), for which he designed gowns for Marlene Dietrich. He won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956) and received multiple nominations for other films such as From Here to Eternity (1953) and A Star Is Born (1954).
Among his notable designs were the black satin strapless gown worn by Rita Hayworth in Gilda (1946). He also created stagewear for Marlene Dietrich and designed for numerous Hollywood stars including Loretta Young, whom he married in 1993.
