Biography
John Carroll Lynch is an American actor and director. Born on 1 August 1963 in Boulder, Colorado, he studied theatre at the Catholic University of America, graduating with a BFA, and began his professional career on stage with the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.
He first gained notice for his role as Norm Gunderson in the 1996 film Fargo. Film credits include Zodiac (2007), Gran Torino (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) and The Founder (2016). Television work includes a recurring role as Steve Carey on The Drew Carey Show (1997–2004) and multiple seasons of American Horror Story. He made his directorial debut with Lucky (2017) and appeared as Meyer Williams in the 2026 series The Beauty.
