In Mark Mylod's work, the tension often comes from somebody trying to conceal what they feel. He looks for those hidden conflicts in rehearsal and builds scenes around what the actors can reveal without spelling everything out. We rate him most as a director of ensembles, attentive to vulnerability when the stakes are high. His long partnerships with showrunners matter because this kind of work benefits from knowing the characters well.
His early work in British television comedy helps explain the ease with which he moves between satire and more painful material. The Royle Family (1998) came before long runs on Entourage and the American Shameless, then six episodes of Game of Thrones between 2015 and 2017. On Succession (2018–2023), he became a central director and executive producer, directing 16 episodes in a long collaboration with writer and showrunner Jesse Armstrong. That sustained involvement gives us a better measure of his contribution than a list of particularly eventful episodes.
The feature work has been less consistent. What's Your Number? (2011) received a mixed response, while The Menu (2022) brought him back to cinema after eleven years. The latter's combination of satire, thriller and tragedy suits someone practised in finding tension inside performances. It is a promising use of his strengths, though one film is not enough to put the cinema work on the same footing as the television.
We were moved by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us (2023), whose performances made its ruined America worth enduring. Some supporting characters needed more space than the scripts allowed, a limit no director can simply wish away. It is the first series we are praising here; Mylod directed Through the Valley in the second (2025), so that enthusiasm is not a verdict on his episode. His interest in what performers can reveal under pressure makes the assignment understandable. Start with Succession for the sustained work with an ensemble that suits him best.
Biography
Mark Mylod is an English director and executive producer of film and television. He began his career directing comedy programmes including Shooting Stars, The Fast Show and The Royle Family, for which he received two BAFTA Television Awards.
He later directed episodes of drama series such as Entourage, The Affair, Game of Thrones and both the British and American versions of Shameless. Mylod is best known for his work on the HBO series Succession (2018–2023), where he directed 16 episodes and served as an executive producer on 37; he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and a Directors Guild of America Award for his work on the show.
His feature films include Ali G Indahouse (2002), The Big White (2005), What's Your Number? (2011) and The Menu (2022). He also directed an episode of the second season of The Last of Us.
