Biography
Anne V. Coates was a British film editor whose career spanned more than sixty years. She began working in the cutting rooms at Pinewood Studios in the late 1940s after earlier jobs in religious films and as a nurse, and received her first editing credit on The Pickwick Papers (1952).
Coates edited David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia (1962), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. She received further Oscar nominations for Becket (1964), The Elephant Man (1980), In the Line of Fire (1993) and Out of Sight (1998). Her later credits include Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich (2000). She was awarded a BAFTA Fellowship in 2007 and an Academy Honorary Award in 2016.
