Biography

Derek R. Hill is an American production designer. He grew up in Texas and graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington. He began his career in theatre and stage work in the Dallas area, including with the Dallas Summer Musicals and Dallas Opera, before entering film and television in the early 1980s as a set decorator and art director.

Hill has worked extensively as a production designer on feature films and television series. His credits include Into the Wild (2007), The Magnificent Seven (2016), Southpaw (2015), Olympus Has Fallen (2013), Ozark (2017–2018) and Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 (2024). He has collaborated repeatedly with directors including Oliver Stone, Sean Penn and Kevin Costner.

He received Primetime Emmy nominations for his production design on Ozark, House and Hatfields & McCoys, and Art Directors Guild nominations for several projects including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).
