Diane Keaton’s comic awkwardness can obscure how direct her dramatic acting is. We value the warmth and timing, but her unhappy, emotionally open Kay in the Godfather films is the performance we return to.

Diane Keaton makes Kay’s discomfort among the Corleones easy to read. In The Godfather (1972), she keeps us aware of how this family looks to someone who does not wholly belong. Francis Ford Coppola makes criminal power disturbingly attractive, and her openness makes its appeal harder to accept without question. We rate that dramatic directness at least as highly as her comedy. She need not dominate the film to matter in it, even when the crowded family politics take some sorting out.
In The Godfather Part II (1974), Kay’s disillusion gives that directness more force. We were upset by Keaton here because we could read Kay’s unhappiness even when the family’s business demanded our attention. Beside Al Pacino, she makes us consider what living close to this power does to someone who has never wholly belonged. The political intrigue can become cumbersome, but her performance gives us a clear reason to care. Coppola gets something from her that the familiar account of her comic eccentricity can obscure.
That comic image took its familiar shape in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (1977), with Manhattan (1979) another important collaboration. The oversized menswear and hats are easy to remember; the comic timing deserves at least as much attention. Her self-deprecation allows an awkward woman to be funny without making her seem foolish for having feelings. We enjoy that warmth, though reducing Keaton to a collection of endearing habits does neither her comedy nor her dramatic work much justice.
Later work continued to move between drama, including Marvin’s Room (1996), and romantic comedy in Something’s Gotta Give (2003). Directing took her elsewhere: Heaven (1987) is a documentary about beliefs in the afterlife. The reception was less dependable behind the camera, with Hanging Up (2000) drawing mixed or poor reviews. Start with Kay, especially if you think you already know what a Diane Keaton performance looks like.

Diane Keaton was an American actress and director. Born Diane Hall on 5 January 1946 in Los Angeles, California, she died on 11 October 2025.
She played Kay Adams in The Godfather (1972) and reprised the role as Kay Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990). She directed an episode of the television series Twin Peaks (1990).
She began her career on stage in the 1968 Broadway production of Hair and appeared in Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam (1972). Other notable film roles include Annie Hall (1977), Manhattan (1979), Father of the Bride (1991) and Something's Gotta Give (2003).
