Biography
Dick Pope was a British cinematographer. Born in Bromley, Kent, he trained at the Pathé lab in London and began his career in 1968 as a camera operator on documentaries. He worked as a cinematographer on feature films from the 1980s and shot music videos in the 1970s and 1980s.
Pope collaborated with director Mike Leigh on eleven films from Life is Sweet (1990) to Hard Truths (2024), including Naked (1993), Secrets & Lies (1996), Vera Drake (2004), Mr. Turner (2014) and Peterloo (2018). He was nominated for Academy Awards for The Illusionist (2006) and Mr. Turner. Other credits include Legend (2015), The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019), Motherless Brooklyn (2019) and The Outfit (2022). He died in London in October 2024.
