Fi1m perspective

Giovanni Ribisi makes unease visible, and can find vulnerability in people who are difficult company. We value that intensity, though the eccentric supporting parts can grow familiar; The Virgin Suicides makes an especially good case for listening to him.

Giovanni Ribisi often lets discomfort show in the contortions of his face. In The Virgin Suicides (2000), Sofia Coppola uses his voice instead, keeping us close to the boys trying to explain what they remember of the Lisbon sisters. Their fascination holds our attention even as it becomes clear how much they fail to understand. We were moved by those attempts to make sense of the girls, because the narration keeps exposing how little their admirers really knew. The film can leave the sisters too distant, but Ribisi helps make that distance painful.

His appearances as Frank Buffay Jr. in Friends from 1995 to 1998 helped establish the eccentric side of his screen presence. As T/4 Medic Wade in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (1998), he brought his intensity to an ensemble under far harsher pressure. The film is frightening and exhausting, with Tom Hanks's strained authority giving us something to hold on to amid the combat. Its writing between battles is more familiar, and we would not claim that the cast can make every passage fresh. Ribisi's ability to convey distress is valuable in a film that makes fear so hard to dismiss.

Boiler Room (2000) gave him the lead as Seth Davis, a young stockbroker drawn into fraud, and room for a subtler vulnerability. Coppola cast him as the self-absorbed John in Lost in Translation (2003); Parker Selfridge in Avatar (2009) gave him a corporate antagonist to play. The reservation is about repetition rather than ability. When the oddness or unpleasantness becomes the main reason for casting him, we can begin to recognise the part before we have paid enough attention to the person playing it.

His attention to cameras and lighting has also taken him behind the camera, with a feature cinematography debut on Strange Darling (2024). That gives him work beyond the familiar character parts, though we would still welcome more acting roles that make use of his quieter qualities. Start with The Virgin Suicides, where there is no expressive face to watch and his contribution is still essential.
