Biography

James Glennon was an American cinematographer. Born in Los Angeles, he was the son of cinematographer Bert Glennon. He began working in the camera department in the 1960s and made his feature debut as cinematographer on Jaws of Death (1977).

Glennon served as camera operator on films including The Conversation (1974), Ordinary People (1980) and Altered States (1980). He gained recognition as director of photography on El Norte (1983) and later collaborated with director Alexander Payne on Citizen Ruth (1996), Election (1999) and About Schmidt (2002). He also worked on Flight of the Navigator (1986).

In television, Glennon was director of photography on The West Wing (1999) and principal cinematographer for the HBO series Deadwood (2004–2006), for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award in 2005. He also contributed to Carnivàle and Big Love.
