Octavia Lenora Spencer is an American actress. She was born on 25 May 1970 in Montgomery, Alabama. She made her film debut in A Time to Kill (1996) and worked in small roles in film and television for over a decade.

Her breakthrough came with the role of Minny Jackson in The Help (2011). For this performance she received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Film Award. She later received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for Hidden Figures (2016) and The Shape of Water (2017). Other credits include Fruitvale Station (2013), for which she won a National Board of Review Award, Zootopia (2016) and the series Mom (2013–2015) and Red Band Society (2014–2015).
