Biography
Arthur Schmidt (also credited as Arthur R. Schmidt) was an American film editor. Born in Los Angeles in 1937, he was the son of film editor Arthur P. Schmidt. He graduated from Santa Clara University with a bachelor's degree in English and began his career as an assistant editor before becoming a full editor in 1977.
Schmidt is best known for his long collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis, editing the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Forrest Gump (1994), Contact (1997) and Cast Away (2000), among others. He also edited Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) and The Last of the Mohicans (1992). He received Academy Awards for Best Film Editing for Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump, as well as multiple ACE Eddie awards. Schmidt died in Santa Barbara, California, in 2023.
