Daniel Radcliffe makes Harry Potter’s responsibilities convincing and his own embarrassment funny in Extras. We value his lack of vanity, though choosing an unusual part is only the beginning.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011), Daniel Radcliffe lets Harry look apprehensive even with fighting all around him. We were moved by that uncertainty, because it makes the responsibility he carries feel real. David Yates keeps returning to the actors when the combat threatens to become exhausting, and Radcliffe gives him a persuasive centre. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint bring warmth as Hermione and Ron, while Radcliffe avoids asking us to admire how much effort being Harry takes.
In Extras (2005), he appears as a version of himself willing to be embarrassed, which makes a useful change from carrying everyone’s hopes. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant build the encounter around discomfort, then leave enough time for it to get worse. Radcliffe’s agreement to look foolish helps keep the mockery from turning sour. Some of the programme’s celebrity sketches are slight, and willingness alone is not comic technique. Still, he understands that the joke needs him to surrender his dignity, and does so without asking for our approval.
His choices began to change before the eight Potter films ended in 2011. Equus (2007) gave him his first major stage role, and plays and musicals have remained a substantial part of his work. After Potter came Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings (2013), a flatulent corpse in Swiss Army Man (2016) and the lead in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022). Those parts suggest an appetite for work that does not offer the reassurance of another familiar hero.
We welcome the curiosity, but an eccentric role still needs to be acted well. His physical commitment to Swiss Army Man tells us he will take a peculiar premise seriously; it need not make that premise attractive to everyone. For us, the useful test is whether he gives a director something to work with beyond the casting, as he does for Yates, Gervais and Merchant. Try Extras first if eight Potter films feel like a substantial commitment.

Daniel Radcliffe is an English actor. He made his television debut in the 1999 BBC film David Copperfield and his feature film debut in The Tailor of Panama (2001).
Radcliffe is known for portraying Harry Potter in the eight films of the series from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). He appeared as himself in the BBC series Extras (2005). His other film roles include The Woman in Black (2012), Kill Your Darlings (2013), Swiss Army Man (2016), Now You See Me 2 (2016) and Imperium (2016). He has starred in the anthology series Miracle Workers since 2019 and has performed in stage productions including Equus and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
